Match Report

In a replay of last years Gold medal match, this was never going to be anything other than an arm wrestle between two high quality teams. And so it proved!

NSW started out hard and had Victoria on the run for much of the first quarter. Lee Brady, having been denied earlier in the quarter by the umpire, slammed home a field goal late in the quarter to give NSW the ascendancy at quarter time.

Victoria came out re-energised in the second quarter and consistently questioned NSW's defense. Their attacking play was rewarded when NSW was unable to defend three consecutive penalty corners late in the quarter, and the match went into half time locked at 1-1 after Charles Swain scored from the third of the PC's.

Alex Jones fired home one of his thunderbolt drag flicks in the 33rd minute, and NSW grabbed the lead again. They were happy to take that lead into the three quarter time break.

That happiness was dulled when Rakesh Pasotram deflected a penalty corner, to once again even things up and make for a tense final quarter. Lee Brady's exuberant celebration after scoring another field goal in the 50th minute was evidence of the tension on the field.

With nothing to lose, Victoria pulled their goalkeeper with 4 minutes to go. This was closely followed by Lee Brady being shown a green card, meaning NSW was defending against 11 field players with only 10 men on the field for 2 minutes. Despite numerous attacks, Victoria were denied, and from a 16 yard hit, a Dean Cunningham bomb found Brett Giffin, who drove through the right-inner channel and slipped a nice ball to Chris Coombes who reverse sticked it into the open net to complete a 4-2 victory.

NSW go through into the Gold medal match while Victoria will play off for Bronze.
